Concealled Tobacco Seizure
9/10/2013 3:57:07 p.m.

On early Tuesday the 22nd of January Customs Officers seized a large consignment of illegal tobacco concealed as commercial tea from China.

Almost 60 kilograms of tobacco was discovered after the use of Customs mobile x-ray truck and the subsequent examination by the Customs Officer based at Tonga Post Office.

Head of Customs Mr. David Sadler said “this is a good example of Customs being vigilant to discover the illegal importation of goods at the Border”.The amount of tobacco seized could have made over 60 000 sticks of cigarettes. Apart from the health implications of the illegal importation, the deliberate attempt to avoid paying the excise is a concern for the department. The CEO of the Ministry, Mrs. Daphney Stone said “we are continuing the investigation and I am pleased Customs has been able to seize this illegal consignment”

If you have any information about this illegal practice or any other information you can contact Customs on info@customs.gov.to or phone 23651.
