MINISTRY OF REVENUE & CUSTOMS

There have been changes to the Income Tax Law and the Ministry of Revenue & Customs wants to help you.

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE NEW SMALL BUSINESS TAX?

If not, let me briefly outline what it is and what it means for you?

For sole traders in business such as market/fair operators, farmers and fishermen earning less than $100,000TOP, a new small business tax is here. All you have to do is register for a Tax Identification Number (if you don’t already have one) and keep records of your daily cash and credit sales and if you have employees a salary and wages register.

There is an exception – it does not apply to companies and professional services such as medical, dental, legal, accounting, financial management, engineering consulting or other similar services;

Also you can opt/elect to remain in the current profit based income tax system, but only if you are keeping proper records. If you don’t want the small business tax to apply to you, please complete a form (form 14) and submit to us by the 30th of September 2014.

So to help you work out if you want to pay small business tax or remain in the current system here are the rates:

New tax based on gross annual turnover (sales) on a cash basis split into 4 rates:

          Turnover $0 -$10,000 tax = lump sum $100;

          Turnover $10,001 - $30,000 tax = lump sum $250;

          Turnover $30,001- $50,000 tax = lump sum $500;

          Turnover $50,001- $100,000 tax @ 2% of turnover

All relevant small business tax forms are available from our offices or on our website. You lodge the SBT tax return on 31st October each year or if your gross annual turnover is between $50,000 and $100,000 you lodge quarterly small business tax returns. If you have paid too much then you can claim a refund at the end of the year using the SBT refund form.

So for all you sole traders out there get along to the tax office and get a TIN and register for the SBT.
