30th April 2021 – Tonga Customs together with the PACER Plus ASYCUDA Project team today commenced the pilot of electronic lodgement of shipping and air manifests as part of its efforts to modernise its Customs processes with the use of internationally renown Customs automation system, ASYCUDA World.

Having completed training for 27 representatives of shipping and freight forwarding agents on the use of the manifest module of ASYCUDA World, Customs today assisted Tongan owned shipping agents, Royco Shipping with their very first electronic lodgement of shipping manifests for their vessel due to arrive on the 3rd of May 2021.

Tongan shipping and airline agents are now able to submit electronic manifests directly from the convenience of their working premises by accessing the Customs automation system, ASYCUDA World online. In addition to the convenience to shipping agents, the system also allows for timely lodgement of manifests to Customs that in turn will give Customs more time to conduct pre-arrival screening of imports and allow them to focus their controls and resources on high-risk imports and offering facilitated clearance to legitimate traders and their goods.

The pilot phase of electronic manifest lodgement has been set for 2 months and Customs will continue to work with the private sector stakeholders to ensure that this transition to full electronic lodgement is a by the end of the entire Project is a smooth one.
